I Can’t Hold it Anymore!

There’s a good chance if you’re reading this blog that you’ve experienced urinary incontinence. In fact, 1 out of 2 women and 1 out of 4 men suffer from urinary incontinence in America. For some people, the fear of an incontinent episode can cause them to avoid doing the things they normally love.

There are multiple different types of incontinence: stress, urge, functional, overflow, and mixed. Stress incontinence is caused by weak pelvic floor muscles that normally hold back urine until we can make it to the toilet. Urge incontinence is also known as overactive bladder which is associated with a constant feeling of needing to go. Overflow incontinence occurs when the bladder fills completely but is unable to empty fully, which causes frequent dribbling, most commonly in men due to prostate issues. Functional incontinence is associated with general weakness which makes it hard to get to the bathroom before the bladder begins to empty. Lastly, mixed incontinence is a combination of any of the other forms of incontinence.
